A learning app that works without a connection

A web platform unusable on intermittent mobile data was replaced by an offline-first app that downloads coursework on Wi-Fi and syncs progress later, tripling course completion.

The situation

What was going wrong

  • 01

Learners lost progress whenever a connection dropped mid-assessment.

  • 02

Video-heavy content consumed more mobile data than learners could afford.

  • 03

The platform assumed a modern device; a large share of learners had older Android handsets.

  • 04

Tutors had no reliable view of who was falling behind until final assessment.

Our approach

What we did, and why

  1. 01

Discovery in the field, not the office

We interviewed learners and tutors about actual device, data, and connectivity constraints. The findings reshaped the scope significantly before development began.

  2. 02

    Offline-first from the ground up

Course modules download in full over Wi-Fi. Assessments run locally with progress queued and synchronised opportunistically, so a lost connection never costs work.

  3. 03

    Budgeted data and device performance

Content was re-encoded to hard data ceilings per module, and the app was tested continuously on low-end handsets rather than on flagship simulators.

  4. 04

    Gave tutors an early-warning view

A simple dashboard highlights learners whose pace suggests they will not finish, enabling tutors to intervene weeks earlier than before.

The outcome

What changed

Course completion roughly tripled against the previous web platform. Data consumption per module fell by around two-thirds after re-encoding, removing the cost barrier learners reported most often. Tutor intervention now happens mid-course, when it can still change the outcome.
